About

The Califa Arts Chapter was chartered on November 12, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. Our President, Dr. La-Doris McClaney, envisioned a group of women of various ages and experiences, forming a sisterly bond to support the organizational goals of The Society, Incorporated, and work together to support young people across greater Los Angeles achieve their dreams through the love of the arts.

The name ”Califa” was chosen as a tribute to Queen Califia, a character in Las Sergas de Esplandian, a 16th century romantic adventure novel written by Garci Rodrigues de Montalvo. Queen Califia was described as a beautiful, strong, and courageous Black warrior queen who ruled the mythical island of California, inhabited only by Black women who were warriors. This novel was so popular at its time that when Spanish conquistadors reached the tip of the Baja Peninsula, they believed they found the fabled island of California and named it accordingly.

The battle to keep youth engaged in arts programs is reminiscent of Queen Califia's legendary strength and determination. Just as Queen Califia fiercely defended her island realm, youth advocates and educators are tirelessly fighting to safeguard the cultural treasures that arts education offers our younger generation. In both cases, the spirit of resilience and commitment is undeniable, as they strive to nurture creativity, ignite passion, and ensure a vibrant legacy for the future. Just as Queen Califia's legacy lives on in the mythic stories of California, the impact of arts programs on our youth will continue to shape and enrich society for generations to come.
